The role of the emergency services in maternity care

As there are up to 5% of emergency service transfers from homebirths, the role of EMS, the communication with midwife, with parents, the division of responsibilities is an important issue. Even more important in countries that do not incorporate homebirths into their maternity care system. In the Czech Republic, a forced, police assisted transfer of a healthy newborn from a non-planned homebirth occurred as the EMS declared themselves incompetent to decide that the newborn is or is not in imminent health danger. Even that specialized “homebirth ambulances” wait in front of the house where birth occurs. Lets discuss together our experience from different countries, different settings, search for working models.
